Acquiring Citizenship through investment in Malta
Following the success and popularity of the Maltese Global Residence Program, the Government of Malta launched the Malta Individual Investor Program (IIP) by virtue of legal notice 47 of 2014.
The Maltese Individual Investor Program (MIIP) was launched by the Maltese Government in 2012 in order to attract foreign investment in to Malta. It offers investors and their families access to EU citizenship and one of the world's top 10 most powerful passports in just over 1 year.
The legislative framework provides an opportunity and structure for investors looking to obtain a European Union citizenship with a straight forward application process and minimal requirements.
The Malta IIP requires the investor to make an economic contribution to the country. Following this, and subject to thorough due diligence, background and application procedure checks, the applicants and their families are granted full EU citizenship.

PROCESS AND REQUIREMENTS
Foreign investors (and their families) who wish to apply for Maltese citizenship through the IIP must meet the following investment requirements:
1. Contribution to the National Development Fund of EUR 650 000
Additional contribution for the spouse and each child over 18 years of age. EUR 25 000
The applicant may include children between the ages of 18-26 if they are financially dependent on the main applicant and are not married. EUR 50 000
Dependent parents over the age of 55 may be included. EUR 50 000
2. Prescribed investment as set out by the Identity Malta agency
This must be held for 5 years after which the full amount is returned to the investor. Investment of EUR 150 000
Note, that all three of the above are required in order to qualify to apply for Maltese citizenship.
1. The applicant must have a clean criminal record
2. Main applicant must be over the age of 18.
3. A valid global health insurance policy with medical expense cover amounting to a minimum of EUR 50 000 per family is a strict requirement.
4. Residence: the applicant must have held legal residence in Malta for one year prior to the certificate of naturalization being issued.
5. All applicants, including children over the age of 18, must visit Malta in person to undertake the Oath of Allegiance
DENIAL OF CITIZENSHIP
A person who has been denied a visa to a country with which Malta has visa-free travel agreements and has not since been able to obtain a visa to that country.
Any person who has been deemed as being one of the following: potential national security risk, reputational risk, or is subject to a criminal investigation.
3. Investment into real estate, there are two options:
A. Purchase of residential property with a minimum value of EUR 350 000
This must be held for 5 years and cannot be rented out during this time.
B. Lease of a residential property with an annual rental, which also must be held for 5 years. Minimum annual rental of EUR 16 000.
Note: The property cannot be let during this time
A Maltese citizenship offers the investor and his family the right to live, study and work anywhere in the European Union.
Malta is a full EU member and therefore with a Maltese citizenship, investors and their families have the same rights as any other EU nationals.
A Maltese passport allows visa free travel to more than 160 countries, including the USA and European Union countries.
Malta's passport has recently been voted as one of the top 10 most powerful passports giving visa free travel to 168 countries visa free (this includes visa on arrival).
